MetaMask - Desktop

Go to https://metamask.io/download/ and install MetaMask on the browser of your choice. For this tutorial, we will be using Firefox (all installations are very similar):

You'll be taken to a screen where you can add the extension to your browser (click the "Add to" button):

You may get an additional permissions box that pops up, click the "Add" button:

You should notice a cool little fox icon in the upper right hand our browser now. That's your MetaMask mascot. He's there to show you that you've successfully installed the MetaMask browser extension.

For any additional options feel free to click "Okay" for right now:

Now that you've successfully installed MetaMask as a browser extension, you can begin setting up your private keys! Click the "Get Started" button:

You'll be presented with two options:

  1. You've used MetaMask in the past and you'd like to import an existing wallet

  2. You, regardless of whether or not you've used MetaMask in the past, would like to create a new wallet

For our tutorial we're going to "Create a Wallet":

A screen may prompt asking if you'd like to send additional data. We will be choosing "No Thanks" in this tutorial:

On this next screen you'll want to create and confirm your password. Make sure to make it a strong one and follow proper password management so you don't forget it and it's always secure 👍

Check the "Terms of Use" box and then click the "Create" button:

The security of your MetaMask wallet is so important! Please take a few minutes to watch the video and read about your Secret Recovery Phrase. We can't stress enough how crucial this part is to the crypto ecosystem as a whole.

After you're done, you can click the "Next" button:

Now that you've learned about the Secret Recovery Phrase, you understand how important it is to keep it a secret. Click in the locked box to reveal your secret words:

Follow one of the many methods to save your Secret Recovery Phrase. An easy thing to do is to get two pieces of paper and write your secret words down (in the correct order) on both pieces of paper.

After you have your secret words written down, you can click the "Next" button:

You will now be prompted to click each word in order to recreate your Secret Recovery Phase as a security measure to make sure you definitely know it. After you arrange them into the correct order, you can click the "confirm" button because you've confirmed that you've written down your Secret Recovery Phrase somewhere:

Now that you've confirmed your Secret Recovery Phrase, you can store your pieces of paper in two separate, but equally secure locations.

Congratulations! You now have a fully functioning MetaMask browser extension! You can click the "All Done" button:

Well now... If we look in the upper right hand corner there we can see it says "Ethereum Mainnet"...

Our next step is to change to Ethereum Mainnet over to the Shimmer EVM Testnet! Click the right button at the bottom of this page to go over to the tutorial that will show you how to add the Shimmer EVM Testnet in MetaMask.
